INTERVIEW WITH JERRY OCCHIUZZI

TruFit Shoe Repair on Main Street began as Victory Shoe Repair on Millburn Avenue 82 years ago. Second-generation owner Jerry Occhiuzzi, who has lived in Millburn since he was 4 years old, grew up working with his father, Nunzio. Recently, we caught up with Jerry about what has kept his trade timeless over the years.

What do you remember most about learning the craft from your father?

My father said owning a business was like having a farm. Every day you have to get up early to milk the cows, feed the chickens, and plant the corn—otherwise the farm doesn’t work. I apprenticed under him at a young age and witnessed his work ethic firsthand.

Your father came from Italy and worked hard to build a life here. What was the dream behind the shop, and how does that show up in your work today?

My father came from Italy at age 18, seeking the American dream. He apprenticed under shoemakers in Paterson and Dover. He heard about an opportunity in Millburn in 1944 to open his own shoe repair business. He named the shop Victory Shoe Repair because we were in the middle of World War II. The rest is history.

Do you have a favorite thing passed down from your father, something you still rely on?

His philosophy that the customer is always right. My father worked seven days a week and never took a vacation. He provided courteous service and built a strong customer base. He approached business with integrity and professionalism.

You’ve seen the shoe industry change dramatically over the decades. What do you think keeps TruFit going strong?

I would attribute it to the customers who have supported the business throughout generations, and the new customers who buy quality and expect high-quality service.

You’re known for giving designer shoes the right kind of TLC. What makes repairing premium shoes different?

You need a sharp eye and attention to detail.

What was the most “Can you save this?” item that turned out to be a win, and what made it possible?

A camel saddle. My skilled craftsmen made it possible, and imagination helped, too.

In a world of fast fashion, what does it mean to you to stretch the life of a quality leather item?

It means less waste for landfills.

After 82 years in business, what do you want the Millburn community to know about TruFit?

We are always here, always available, and always helpful. We appreciate all the support from our customers over the years. It is a privilege to grow up, live, and serve the community.
